Update 1: Tuesday, September 3, 2002

I drew a picture of the entrance to Lavezzi. Lavezzi is a little rock island off Corsica.  There were a million fish there and we found a great place to snorkel and fish with our spear gun.  My brother Danny caught a fish with the spear gun.  My dad took it off, but we forgot to take a picture.  We through it back because it was too small to eat and I don’t think it was edible anyway.  One night we were there, there was a huge lightning storm.  Two boats were clinging onto us because their anchors slipped.  Our anchor was the only one that held.  I really liked Lavezzi.

Hi, it’s me again, talking about Corsica.  I really liked Calvi.  There is a big Citadel – that’s a fort – up on the hill.  There is an old city inside the fort.  I had the best ice cream of the trip so far at Calvi.

There is also a big fort at Bonifacio.  My parents are killers – they made us walk up the really steep path to get up there. There were a lot of dos there.  In Europe, there are a lot of doggies all over the place.  I always want to pet every single doggie I see.

In Sardinia, which is in Italy, I went wind surfing and jet skiing.  In Porto Chervo, my mommy tried to cut Danny’s hair.  It was all puffy and ridgy, and made a mess of the boat.  We had hair all over the place.  My daddy fixed it a little, but it stayed a bit puffy and ridgy for a week or so.

The End.

Update 2: October 10, 2002

I love jet skiing and water skiing. I like real jet skis where you stand better than the ones when you sit. We went water skiing in San Cipriano. Water skiing is good too.

Paninis are the best sandwich ever invented in France. They have ham and cheese paninis. They are the best kind. In French they are called "Panini jambon e fromage." You put paninis in a weird kind of waffle maker. We call it a smoosher. My brother Danny is going to start a panini stand when we get home. They have the best bread for paninis in France.

I like the boat, but I liked home better. I miss my house. I miss my baby sitter Neenie. I liked school at home more that here. I miss my friends a lot too. But I like here a lot too. We see a lot of cool stuff, and have more ice cream than we usually do. The ice cream here is very good.

Soccer in Europe is the main sport. We went to a soccer game in Genoa with my grandmother. Someone got hurt every five seconds. The fans had their own songs and chants. We beat a bunch of ten year olds in Marina di Campo at a beach. We played soccer today at a really good field near San Tropez. My brother Danny kicked the ball at me really hard six times. He is not mean though because he did it on accident. The other team thought I was out of the game but, when Adam shot and no one was in the goal, I came from behind and saved the goal. I scored a bunch of times.

I have learned on the boat that everything has to be done correctly and quickly or else something will break. When we sail everything needs to put away, latched and locked. Trimming the sail is fun, but I could get pulled overboard when trimming the jib. My mom almost did once. But ours is a special boat, is has an electric trimmer. I also can do a winch, someone who does a winch is called a winch monkey. I am allowed to steer the boat but I don’t like too. I do like to dock the boat. We always play poker and black jack. We use poker chips. I like the boat. The boat is fun. I like france and italy.

Monaco has the best chocolate shop in history. I like their chocolate so much. I only want one or two squares a day cause I want to savor it. Monaco does not have a king, only a prince. But the prince rules Monaco. The prince is the chocolate tester for the shop. Monaco is the smallest country in the world. It is not on most maps. Monaco was the place that people keep their big big big big humoungous yachts. Monaco has really nice cars. It has more nice cars than I have seen in Italy and France combined. We all gave some money to my mom and dad to play in the casino for us. We all lost our money.

Pisa has the best candy shop ever. I like the leaning tower too. The leaning tower leans over 1mm more every year. It leans 5%. We took a picture of my mom pretending to hold up the tower. They have a really good pastry shop and the best ice cream that I’ve ever have. In the ice cream shop has really really good chocolate. But not as much as Monaco’s. Not even close. Outside of the candy shop we saw a guy playing crystal glasses filled with water. Later that day we tried to do it. I was the first one to make a musical sound. Pisa has the best stuff to eat.

Update 3: December 10, 2002

An Essay on Venice

I went to Venice on a train. I went with my aunt, grandma and grandpa.  The rest of my family was on a sail from Cannes to Rome.

We did many fun things. We stayed in a hotel. I caught pigeons. I went in Saint Marks Cathedral.

I like Venice. I like the glass blowing. The pigeons were fun. And the Grand Canal is huge. I want to return to Venice.

An Essay on Gaeta

We are in Gaeta for the winter. Gaeta is in between Rome and Naples. In Italian, they are called Roma and Napoli. There's an American Navy base here. Gaeta means cookies in Spanish, but not in Italian.

Gaeta is a nice town. It has a medieval castle. I know the word medieval because in a movie called Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures they say "you killed Ted, you medieval dickweed".  It has a good beach. Gaeta has the best ice cream in Europe and probably the best pizza too.

I have made friends from the navy base. I also have made friends with Dutch and Norwegian kids who are living on boats too, and are learning English.

I got a new bike here. I ride it everywhere. I like my bike. It helps me get place after place.

Life in Gaeta

I got a new bike. It's new to me, but it's very old.  I got a bike because we have no car and will be here for a while. I ride it everywhere. I ride it with my new friends.

We've also gone lots of places by bus and train, like Rome, Venice, and Florence. I am the only one that went to Venice. I went to Venice with my grandparents. Oh yea, and my aunt.

I went to an abbey to pick olives. I had friends there. At the abbey there was a dog called an Abutsie Sheppard. They are huge.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was with all the cruisers. Many were not American. It was not with my cousins and grandparents. We ate at a place called the captainery.

Everyone brought food to eat. We brought turkey and stuffing. Some people didn't eat turkey. Charlotte didn't eat it because she didn't think she'd like it, and Annette is a vegetarian. Charlotte is my friend from the Dutch boat and Annette is my friend from the Norwegian boat.  There were lots of great deserts. The best was Andreas' cake. He's from Norway.

After dinner my friends and I ran around. We played pretend games and danced around. It was fun.

Update 4: March 5, 2002

The last time I put something on this website was almost three months ago. We have done a lot since then. We went skiing in Corchevel France, then met my Grandma in Paris. We could have gone skiing in Paris (it snowed!!) but we didn’t. After Paris, we went skiing again – in Val d’Isere/Tignes and Chamonix in France, Courmeyeur in Italy, and Zermatt in Switzerland. We got some Swiss chocolate there, it was really good! Even in the supermarket it’s really good. We also got chocolate fondue mix, which we ate when we got back to Gaeta. It’s a lot better than hot fudge. It’s the best. I want to go back to Switzerland to get some more. I also want to go back again because of the train ride, but I’ll tell you about that later. After all that skiing, we took the train back to Gaeta.

See, that’s why I said I’ll tell you about that later. It was an overnight train. They are really, really fun. One of the good things about it is they have snack bars, almost always. But before when I went to Venice with my grandparents, they didn’t have any food or sleeping cars -- that was the worst train in the world.

When we got back to Gaeta we spent the first two days getting our boat back in the water. The only good part was I got to play with a really cute dog at the boatyard. I named him whitey, because he was white. Since we’ve been back I’ve gotten to play a lot with my friend Charlotte, played basketball with the Navy kids, and have gone to Brownies with other Navy girls. We also took a 3-day trip to Venice. Then, my grandparents and my Aunt Marcia came to visit us in Gaeta; my aunt stayed with us on the boat, but my Grandparents stayed in the Hotel Gaeta.

You’re about to read below about Paris, what we did with my grandparents, and a little bit about sailing. It’s all stuff I wrote a little while ago during my school, so you should really read it. Otherwise I did all this stuff for nothing.

1/25/03

My family went to the Louvre. The entrance was a glass pyramid. There was a cool handicap elevator too. There were also Crown Jewels, mummies and an ancient wall. The ancient wall was stone. There was a huge diamond. The mummies were pretty and had lots of colors. Did you know that real pyramids in Egypt used to have gold on top? They did, and people stole it.

1/28/03

I will introduce you to Montmartre, which we visited in Paris. It has the deepest metro station in all of Paris. There were 398 steps to get to the top. There were also pictures all the way up. We took a tour of Montmatre and it was freezing. Part of the tour was a famous church called Sacre Couer.

1/29/03

We went to Venice!  It was fun!  The pigeons were hard to catch!  But I still managed.  My brothers and my Mom and Dad were grossed out.  Danny and Adam kept telling me to do stuff, but they wouldn’t even touch the seeds.  I almost bought a pack of seeds to bring to the train station to feed the pigeons there too.

2/08/03 (written by Sarah on her own when she woke up early one morning, with only editing for spelling)

I love sailing. The blue seas. Helming. Docking. Sailing the white caps. Seeing the fish and whales. Oh the beauty.

2/13/03

Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Marcia visited. They live far away in New York and Boston. We went to: the Amalfi coast, Naples, Casserta Palace, the Abbey at Monte Cassino, and the ancient ruins at Herculaneum. We went to all these places because we wanted them to have a good time. And me? I had a good time too.

2/17/03

Amalfi was pretty. Amalfi was curvy. Amalfi was hilly. Amalfi is high. There was a cute cat. There was a cute dog. I love them.

March 25, 2003 Update

A series of "essays" by Sarah

St. Anton

First of all, dumpling soup. Well, it's Austrian. O.K. forget that. On the way to a place called Rendl, there was a conveyor belt and two rope tows. It was great! One of the best parts was powder!! Another good part was bubble lifts with conveyor belts. I also love poma lifts.  Just so fun.  And then there are T-bars.  Riding them was fun with Danny.

Innsbruck

I went to a place called AlpenZoo.  I went with my Dad.  It was in Innsbruck.  I saw a ton of animals.  My favorite one was the bobcat.

April 14th

I want to introduce you to the island of Ventotene. We got tons of bamboo here. We also had a beach fire. Before that we went swimming. We spent a lot of time looking for a snorkel. I was with my friend Charlotte. Her family is on our boat for a week.

After Ventotene we went to Procida. Well really we went to an island called Ischia that had lots of shops. I like Procida the best because it had a beach with lots of shells. We all found shells and then we had ice cream. It was fun.
